The Cloister
The cloister is a central and tranquil space inside the convent, surrounded by porticoes. It was a place of gathering and meditation for the monks, where daily and spiritual activities took place, symbolizing the connection between community life and contemplation.
The small convent cloister on the ground floor, with a trapezoidal plan and double loggia, is marked by columns with brick shafts and elegant Corinthian capitals in Alberese stone, a design replicated in the upper loggia. Occupied for over a century by the 19th-century chapel dedicated to Beata Giulia, built by the Sienese architect Giuseppe Pianigiani in 1854 as a sign of gratitude for saving Certaldo from cholera, this open space was restored to its very early 15th-century form during the 1963 restoration.
