Foundation

Founded in 2001 as part of the “Small Great Museums” initiative, the Certaldo Alto Augustinian Convent Museum is located in the heart of the medieval village and is part of a sacred art circuit in Valdelsa. The museum collects works from local churches, providing a space that highlights the religious and artistic history of the region and creating a cultural bond with other institutions, such as the Collegiata Museum of Empoli and the San Vivaldo complex with its “Miniature Jerusalem.”.

The Crypt and the Cell

In 2010, the Certaldo Alto Augustinian Convent opened its underground areas and the cell of Blessed Giulia to the public, offering a unique opportunity to explore these historic sites. The cell of Blessed Giulia is particularly significant: it is the small room where young Giulia della Rena lived in seclusion for decades in the 14th century, dedicating herself to prayer and contemplation. The convent’s undergrounds, once used for practical and spiritual purposes, have been restored to allow visitors to plunge into the history and spirituality of the place.
