Mission

The Museum of the Augustinian Convent does not have its own juridical identity and constitutes an organisational branch within the territorial network of the Museums of Sacred Art of the Archdiocese of Florence.

The museum, in relation to its legal status and organisation, establishes its governing bodies and management procedures regarding the annual plan of activities for the enhancement of the collection, education, promotion and the management of available financial resources. The museum has technical and scientific autonomy and bases its activities on criteria of effectiveness, efficiency and economy.

The Museum preserves, protects and valorises, through studies and research, the heritage of sacred art, that bears witness to faith at the service of the community and its cultural development, guaranteeing public accessibility and respecting the principles dictated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the 1995 London Agreement (updated in 2002) and the pertinent Italian legislation. The museum’s aims are drawn along the guidelines indicated in 1997 by Pope Paul II, according to whom ‘Museums of Sacred Art are not repositories of inanimate artefacts, but perennial nurseries in which the genius and spirituality of the community of the faithful are handed down’.

The management of the museum pursues the goals indicated in the Protocllo d’Intesa between the CEI and the Conferenza delle Regioni e delle Province autonome, namely ‘to maximise synergies and cooperation, both at national and regional level, through the definition of concerted policies and initiatives aimed at the knowledge and enhancement of the ecclesiastical heritage and the development of religious tourism, in full respect of the protection of the heritage and the needs of the places of worship and the sacred rites performed therein, festivals and religious traditions’.

The convent complex, which is now a museum, and the Church of San Jacopo and San Filippo are subject to a protection order.
